BBCW Member Day Trip: Greybull South Petroglyph Site
On this Member Day Trip, Dr. Larry Loendorf leads a group to Greybull South Petroglyph Site. Members start with an introductory lecture at the Center, visit the petroglyph site, and end with lunch in Greybull City Park before returning to the Center.
Cost for this trip is $25 per member or $40 per member couple.

We plan to carpool/caravan to the site. If you’re willing to ride with others or allow others to ride with you, please let us know when you sign up!
We’ll be providing coffee and pastries in the morning and ice water at lunch. You’ll need to bring a bag lunch and any other beverages you may desire. From the parking area, it’s a short hike on uneven ground to reach the site. Plan to wear comfortable layers with adequate sun protection and good walking shoes.
About Greybull South
Greybull South is a large petroglyph site to the east of the Bighorn River a few miles south of Greybull, Wyoming. The site is best known for large, pecked outline shield-bearing warrior figures and an array of bear paws that are made in a half-dozen different ways. Recent work at the site revealed incised figures, some in interactive scenes with other incised figures.
Harold McCracken, a former director of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, organized and directed the removal of nine blocks of sandstone with petroglyphs on them in 1962. These blocks were on display at the museum until a decision was made to place them in storage. In the intervening years it was learned that some of the blocks were from federal property and in 2019 an agreement was made to transfer the blocks to the University of Wyoming curation facility.
The many petroglyphs that remain at the site will be discussed on the field trip. We will also talk about the strategy of removing petroglyphs for their safe-keeping and the unintended consequences.
About Larry Loendorf
Larry Loendorf is a native Montanan who received BA and MA degrees from the University of Montana and a PhD from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He taught at the University of North Dakota for 22 years and then at New Mexico State University for 10 years. He currently manages Sacred Sites Research, Inc., a non-profit company.
In his career, he located and excavated dozens of sites in the Pryor Mountains. For the past thirty years he has concentrated on rock art related research. Loendorf has written ten books and hundreds of reports and articles about northern Plains archaeology.
