Coffee & Curators: Draper Natural History Museum

Free for members! Coffee & Curators invites members to enjoy coffee, refreshments, and the company of other members as one of the Center of the West’s curators speaks on a topic related to their content area – special projects, recent acquisitions, significant objects, and future plans. It’s a great way to learn what’s going on behind-the-scenes at the Center of the West!
Our May program features our Draper Natural History Museum Curator Corey Anco and Curatorial Assistant Amy Phillips, who present Scientific Research of the Draper Natural History Museum.
Natural history museums play an important role in bridging the scientific community and public audiences. Research undertaken by natural history museums aims to understand nature and our role in it. Products of scientific research can come in many forms, from publications, presentations, and books, to physical exhibits and is one measure of the caliber of research undertaken by natural history museum researchers. At this program, Corey and Amy take us on an exciting foray into the research of the Draper Natural History Museum as they discuss research efforts to document the arrival of spring, study human and bat occupancy in the alpine, and document the elusive pinyon jay, among other things:
• The Paul Stock Phenology Study
• Pollinator Census
• Absaroka Bat Census – bats in the alpine
• Pinyon Jay, Limber Pine, Greater Sage-grouse Study
• Studying Human Mobility through Strontium Isotope Analysis
• North American Insect Abundance Network
