The First Day Movie
Healthy Park County presents “Community Screenings,” a series of documentaries and conversations to empower wellness. Our upcoming film, The First Day, examines youth substance abuse through the power of storytelling.
Community Screenings will be held in Powell on Wednesday, May 11, at 6 pm at Vali Twin Cinema and in Cody on Thursday, May 12, at 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm at Big Horn Cinemas. Following the 50-minute film, attendees can engage in a Q&A conversation with local mental health professionals and law enforcement. These events are free.
Chris Herren had a successful career as a professional basketball player before losing it all to the disease of addiction. In The First Day, Herren reveals his story of vulnerability and addiction. His recovery journey led him to profound connections and conversations with high school students. This film addresses mental health concerns and the reasons why young people turn to substances and other harmful behaviors.
“The focus oftentimes is about the worst day when it comes to speaking about addiction and not the first day,” Herren said in the film. “Kids need to understand how this begins rather than how it ends. Prevention starts on the first day.”
The First Day invites open dialogue about substance use and addiction. It offers the opportunity to deepen our understanding and sense of compassion for individuals struggling with substance use disorder.
Community Screenings are offered with support from the Drug-Free Communities Support Program and in partnership with Park County School Districts, Big Horn Cinemas, Vali Twin Cinema, Powell Valley Community Education, and Northwest College Center for Training and Development.
