The Hodges Site (12Mg564) and the Emergence of the Oliver Phase

In 2019, Gray & Pape conducted data recovery efforts at the Hodges Site (12Mg564) on behalf of the Indiana Department of Transportation for the I-69 Corridor Project. The Hodges Site is in the White River Valley of central Indiana. The site is multi-component but most of the occupation consists of a late pre-contact Oliver phase (1200-1450 CE) component. Pat will provide an overview of data recovery efforts conducted in 2019 and then his presentation will focus on how investigations at the Hodges Site have provided new information on the emergence of the Oliver phase in central Indiana.

“The Oliver Phase was a Late Woodland Native American culture that flourished from 1200-1450 CE along the east and west forks of the White River in central and southern Indiana. The name came about in 1946 to describe a Late Woodland ceramic complex.”

Pat Trader attended the University of Missouri-Columbia earning an MA in Anthropology with an emphasis in Midwestern archaeology. He is currently a Senior Principal Investigator at Gray & Pape in Cincinnati, Ohio. Pat has conducted archaeological investigations in the Midwest, Southeast, and Northern Plains. Pat has spent the last 10 years conducting archaeological and geoarchaeological iinvestigations for the I-69 project in the Greater Ohio and White river valleys.
