Cody Library’s StoryWalk® Ribbon Cutting

Cody Library is excited to announce the ribbon cutting ceremony for a brand-new community StoryWalk® on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. outside the Children’s Library play area. The StoryWalk® is a fun new way for children (and adults) to enjoy reading in the outdoors. Laminated pages from a book are inserted into 18 separate metal frames that wind up the pathway. As you stroll up the walk, you’re directed to the next page in the story.

The StoryWalk® was funded by community donations to the Summer Reading Program at the library this summer to benefit Lyla Wead. Lyla is a seven-year-old twin who suffers from a severe form of epilepsy. The idea behind the project for Lyla was to enhance the library’s outdoor space she already enjoys and considers her “Happy Place”. There, she can enjoy library resources without the many sights, sounds, and smells that could trigger a seizure.

The project includes the StoryWalk® and many kindness benches that will placed on the path around the entire building. Lyla will also have a special bench made in her favorite color, yellow, that will be placed at the end of the StoryWalk®, facing the UW Extension Outreach Garden. The quote, from Lyla’s grandmother, that will be on her bench is, “Sing me a song to make me happy”.

The StoryWalk® ceremony will include a ribbon cutting and many other fun activities. The first story to be displayed will be, If You Give A Pig A Pancake, by Laura Numeroff. Attendees are encouraged to wear the color yellow in honor of Lyla, who plans to be at the event with her family.

If you have further questions about this event or the Lyla Wead Kindness Project, contact the Cody Children’s Library at (307) 527-1884. Come and celebrate this amazing community addition!

The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
